About Us

Company Background

Boomerang Systems is local to the centre of Bristol and offers best value services to the city and surrounding areas. We have been successfully providing PC technical support services for in excess of 5 years now.

Collectively, our experience in supporting Microsoft products extends back to the mid 1980s. Such experience continues to be of great value to the Company in supporting those who choose to remain with Microsoft software, or for those who, as yet, know of no alternative.

The Company Today

In the last 3 years, we have discovered the value and great potential of the community based, free and open source software world, based on the Linux operating system. Of course. We continue to offer support to our customers who use Microsoft software; but having invested heavily in a training program, we are now in the exciting position of being able to offer Linux and FOSS products and services to our customers.

However, since becoming acquainted with and skilled in Linux, its derivatives (i.e. distributions) and all the related free and open source software involved, we are fervent advocates that in a truly free and open society, software should be free (as in freedom) to all and should not come with constraints on its use, development, sharing and growth. To that end our bespoke hand built PCs come with Linux preinstalled. We will provide Microsoft Windows should you request it, but would advise against it.

Our Mission

We believe that the dominance (and near monopoly in some markets) of Microsoft products is bad for everyone. Proprietary, secret and closed source software benefits no one other than the copyright holders who charge for its use. In particular, students of all ages exposed only to secret, closed source software learn only that brand of software rather than learning about computing and computers in general. Further, we believe closed source software has not helped stem the widespread existence of much of the malicious threats from a web connected world.

We believe that a world with a dominant desktop principally based around Linux and Unix family based software would greatly benefit everyone. The software is more robust; we are safer since the operating systems, properly used, are virtually impervious to viruses and other threats; the displays look crisper and more attractive; our PCs are easier to use and therefore bring more fun and enjoyment in their use.

We believe the future of software lies with the Open Source Software community and Our Mission is:

  • to make as many people as possible aware that there is an alternative to existing software that is usually expensive, unreliable, insecure and badly written,
  • to encourage as many people as possible to use Linux and related free & open source software,
  • to bring the wide range of healthy benefits of Linux and free & open source software into education and introducing this to students as early as possible to maximise their learning experience.
